Migrant Education

"Education for All...Success for Everyone"

Southwest Virginia Migrant Education Program (MEP)

What is the Migrant Education Program?

The migrant education program is a national program that provides educational and support services to eligible migrant children each year. These services help children of migrant workers overcome the disadvantages they face: inadequate living space, low incomes, interruption to their education.

The Virginia Migrant Education Program (MEP) provides supplemental resources aimed at helping migrant students achieve academic success.

Virginia has 10 regional migrant programs of seasonal farm workers who plant, cultivate and harvest crops, as well as, dairy, livestock, and poultry workers. The children are eligible for program services for a period of 3 years after the date of their last move across a school district line to seek migrant employment.

The MEP provides a comprehensive array of supplemental educational and support services for these highly mobile and often limited English proficient children and their families.

About The Program:

The Southwest Virginia Program provides quality academic support services to migrant students in the counties of Carroll, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Scott, Grayson, Smyth, Washington, Floyd and Galax City. Students come from Mexico and other US States. The primary goal of the SWVA Migrant program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma or complete a GED that purposes them for further learning.
